    A look at the top teams, players in 2024 Southwest Ohio high school girls tennis

    While tennis fans enjoy their favorites in the Paris Olympics, the high school season is right around the corner as local stars get ready to serve up some gold-medal performances of their own.

    The first matches of the regular season begin Friday, Aug. 9. The sectional tournaments begin the week of Sept. 30, and the state tournament Oct. 17-18.

    Here is a look at some of the top stories and players for the 2024 season, partially compiled on information from coaches.

    Mason could be even better after a dominant 2023 season

    The Mason Comets return their entire starting lineup from last year, prompting head coach Mike Reid to be optimistic that the Comets could have their best team in school history.

    Mason won the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association state title while winning the Greater Miami Conference championship for the ninth straight season.

    Junior Addison Cassidy returns as a state singles qualifier, and she was the first singles champion in the Greater Miami Conference tournament.

    Pratyusha Chaudhuri and Emma Wagner were state doubles champions and had great seasons in singles during the year.

    Sophomore Saanvi Reddy and junior Ana Gotike were also state doubles qualifiers.

    Chloe Zhang and Ayumi Kashiwakura also played key roles for the deep Comets program.

    Clinton-Massie looks for another league championship

    Clinton-Massie had a season for the ages in 2023, winning the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference-American championship and going 17-1 overall. The Falcons return their top two singles players and two of their top four doubles players, led by senior Addison Swope, who is the SBAAC-American player of the year and the first singles champion in the conference tournament. Senior Maria Jones (second singles) and seniors Brylie Green and Noel Gasaway (doubles) were also league champions.

    Indian Hill continues dominance in Division II

    Indian Hill won the Cincinnati Hills League championship for the 27 th straight year in 2023 and was the Division II OTCA state champion.

    The Braves return junior Sophia Thompson, the Division II state singles runner-up and regional runner-up. Caroline Brown also returns in singles, while Cassie Larsen returns as a state qualifier in doubles.

    Loveland, Walnut Hills hope to unseat Turpin in the ECC

    Turpin has won the last three championships in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference and will go for four in a row without its top four players from last year, including 2024 graduate Sarah Clark. The Coastal Carolina commit was the regional champion and finished fourth in Division I state singles.

    Loveland, who won the title in 2020 and 2021, returns five varsity players this season, led by singles players Marlee Fleming (junior) and Laura Hiett (senior), plus doubles players Anna Proano-Raps (junior), Jenna Bullock (junior) and Maddie Murphy (junior). Fleming and Hiett finished third in the ECC in their singles brackets.

    Walnut Hills returns its top three singles players, including sisters Irisa Poompanit and Perasa Poompanit, who played doubles in the postseason and reached the state quarterfinals in Division I.

    Players to watch

    Listed in alphabetical order.

    Brogan Bell, Seven Hills – The senior is one of the top returning players in the Miami Valley Conference.

    Caroline Boyle, Badin – The senior finished fourth in Division II state singles after finishing third in the regional. She was the Greater Catholic League-Coed player of the year.

    Addison Cassidy, Mason – The junior won the GMC championship at first singles and was co-player of the year in the league, helping the Comets win the league championship and the OTCA state championship. She qualified for state in singles.

    Emma Wagner and Pratyusha Chaudhuri, Mason – The sophomore/junior duo won the Division I state doubles championship and helped the Comets win the OTCA state championship. They won GMC titles at second and third singles, respectively, in the league tournament.

    Marlee Fleming, Loveland – The junior finished third in No. 1 singles at last year’s ECC tournament and could contend for the title this season.

    Lucy Glassmeyer, Mariemont – The senior was 18-2 in singles during the season and was part of a doubles team that reached the Division II state quarterfinals.

    Libby Goedde, Ursuline – The junior is the only returning first-team all-league player in the Girls Greater Catholic League. St. Ursula, the three-time reigning champion, graduated its top five players so Ursuline is looking for its first title since 2020.

    Lillian Gray, Georgetown – The senior is the top returning player in the SBAAC-National, winning co-player of the year honors in singles.

    Renee Harper, Oak Hills – The incoming freshman is a four-star recruit who will take over the first singles slot for the Scots and aim to make immediate noise in the Division I postseason.

    Lisa Kai, Sycamore – The junior is Sycamore’s top singles player, as the Aviators hope for another great season, returning six of their top seven players. Kai finished fourth in first singles in the GMC tournament.

    Brooke Lint, Oak Hills – The junior won the GMC championship at second singles and also played first doubles. She was co-player of the year in the GMC.

    Irisa Poompanit, Walnut Hills – She is the top returning singles player in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference, finishing second in the ECC tournament to 2024 graduate Sarah Clark of Turpin. The senior teamed with sister Perasa Poompanit, a sophomore, to reach the Division I state doubles quarterfinals.

    Jayden Puryear, Summit Country Day – The sophomore is the top returning singles player for the Miami Valley Conference champions.

    Addison Swope, Clinton-Massie – She was the SBAAC-American Player of the Year and the league champion in first singles. She led the Falcons to a 17-1 record and the division championship, going 10-4 overall.

    Sophia Thompson, Indian Hill – The junior was Division II state runner-up and regional runner-up in her first season with the Braves. She is a two-time state runner-up.
