STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now ) — The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said they arrested a man for driving into a deputy’s cruiser while intoxicated on Monday night.

Shortly after 11 p.m., a deputy was at the intersection of Garrisonville Road and Salisbury Drive when he noticed a car with an equipment violation.

He conducted a traffic stop on the Jessica Cheney Bridge when his cruiser was struck by a speeding black Acura, just seconds after he got out of the car, the SCSO said.

The deputy broadcasted the car’s information to nearby deputies as it fled. The driver swerved between lanes and ran a red light at Richmond Highway as the car entered the area of Aquia Harbour.

Deputies were able to find the car relatively quickly due to evidence left at the scene of the crash, including a side view mirror.

SCSO identified the driver as 39-year-old Stephen Alexander.

Alexander had a revoked license due to a DUI in 2023. SCSO said he had signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath.

He was charged with second offense driving under the influence within five years, felony hit and run and several other related charges.

He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
