ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) —As a part of the state budget, millions of dollars were allocated to help moderate- and low-income families.

“$350 million dollars, meaning one million New York families with children will be receiving a check in the mail by the end of August,” said Governor Kathy Hochul.

Through the Empire State Child Tax Credit, families can be sent up to $330 per child in a supplemental payment.

“So, anyone with Kids under the age of 17 can qualify for the credit within certain income limits,” explained Kate Breslin, President of the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy. “People start to become ineligible at $110,000 and then it starts phasing in at around $10,000.”

Breslin said the tax credit is also based on the number of children in a family.

The amount of the check will range from 25 to 100 percent of the child tax credit families received last year. According to the New York State Department of Tax and Finance, those who are eligible received at least $100 for the Empire State Tax Credit for tax year 2023 and filed a state income tax return by April 15, 2024.

“New Yorkers don’t have to do anything to receive this payment,” said Hochul. “No forms, no phone calls, no hoops to jump through. It’s just going to come to them.”

Breslin said the money will be timely for families.

“It’s coming right at a moment when families are thinking about back-to-school shopping and things like that.”

This is a supplemental payment for this year only.
