BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – The roads in California can be dangerous, where roughly 12 people die every day.

Caltrans and the California Office of Traffic Safety wants your help in making the roads safer and they want to reward the best ideas.

The agencies are holding the Safer Roads Contest: What Drives you to Make California Roads Safer.

DWI vs. DUI: Is there a difference?

You can share what makes you a traffic-safety champion and make a commitment to taking the Traffic Safety Champion pledge for the chance to win up to $500 in cash gift cards.

To enter the contest, go to this website and write, in 100 words or less, how you commit to making California roads safer.

Then complete the safety pledge. Next, design and create a yard sign about how you commit to change, overcome dangerous driving behavior and submit a photo of the sign.

Finally, show your support for Caltrans, law enforcement, first responders and other highway workers by posting a photo of yourself wearing orange to social media and use the hashtag #BeWorkZoneAlert.

Each step is worth up to 100 points, except the yard sign, which is worth as many as 200 points.

A panel of judges will review the completed tasks and rank them from highest number to lowest.

Creativity, clarity of message and impact will all be part of the judging criteria.

The entry deadline is Aug. 29, 2024.
