United Way of Sandusky County is asking the community to help “Stuff the Bus” with school supplies to help students as they prepare to return to the classroom.

The event is being held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 in the Walmart parking lot on Ohio 53. A list of needed school supplies can be found in the store or on United Way’s website, https://uwsandco.org/ . The event is being held in partnership with the Sandusky County Public Health, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Department, and Walmart.

According to Jill Simpson, CEO and president of United Way of Sandusky County, this is the second year United Way of Sandusky County has involved the community in donating school supplies.

Stuff the Bus was a success in 2023

“Last year was such a success that we made the decision to host the “Stuff the Bus” event again this year.

“It was so touching to see so many shoppers and businesses donate. It was obvious how much the community cares about the success of our youth in Sandusky County,” said Simpson. Every school district in the county is being offered school supplies to help ensure students come to school ready to learn and that teachers have access to supplies year-round so every student can participate in classroom activities. “There is a need every year but with the continued rise of inflation, we anticipate an even greater need this year.”

Event held during Ohio Tax Holiday

The event is being held during Ohio’s annual sales tax holiday when Ohio sets aside special days for consumers to buy certain items without sales tax. This sales tax holiday helps families buy clothing, supplies, and more items their children may need to be successful in the coming school year.

United Way helps fund over 25 programs and services at other community agencies making a positive impact every day on the lives of children and families in Sandusky County. Internal programs of United Way include the Cancer Care Fund, which provides financial assistance to residents diagnosed with cancer; First Call for Help, an information and referral line that helps residents seeking community assistance; and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, providing free books to children aged 0-5.
