Wednesday, July 31 Forecast: Cold front Thursday brings minimal change

We were saved from the worst of the heat yesterday by some midday cloud cover holding temperatures back in the low 90s. However, it still felt like 105° with very high humidity.

Expect more of the same today: Hot, humid, and mainly sunny. Like yesterday, a round of clouds may interrupt portions of the day but skies will largely be filled with sunshine. These clouds are because of an area of low pressure at the surface over Southwest Kansas. Light rain develops near Wichita and fizzles out as it moves into Western Missouri leaving behind some clouds.

The severe weather risk also will stay to the north of I-70 today as another disturbance tracks up and around the heat dome.

Another disturbance late in the day Thursday will bring a weak “cool” front through the area Thursday night. This front will bring a very low chance for isolated rain showers or a thunderstorm.

This weak boundary will lower temperatures by roughly 5° from Friday through the weekend.

The early August heat looks to remain firmly in place early next week. Expect high temperatures in the mid-90s Monday through Wednesday of next week. Some data suggests a strong cold front may break through the heat dome late next week therefore putting an end to our hot weather trend. More to come.
