Geno Smith: Fantasy Cinderella Or Has Midnight Struck?

After a major rebound season in 2022, Smith returned to having a skeptical season in 2023. This last season, Smith fell all the way back to QB19 overall. His completion percentage went from the league's best to 18th in accuracy. In 2023, Smith still showed he had the arm strength, as he was on target with 60% of his throws at least 20 yards down the field.

Some significant factors in his falling performance were his decrease in TDs and his carry amount. Going into the 2024 season, Seattle is under a new coaching regime (brought in Ryan Grubb from the University of Washington) that could entirely change how the offense runs.

Whether this will benefit Geno Smith or not is still unknown. Geno and Michael Penix share similarities, and the skill groups are also a match with the 3 dynamic receivers. Smith should gain from this offense.

Smith will have nice support around him again, with a loaded WR room consisting of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and JSN. With this team and Smith's arm strength, there definitely is a high ceiling for the quarterback this season. However, Seattle also spent a decent amount of capital to trade for Sam Howell (Howell, a 4th and a 6th for a 3rd and a 5th).

If Smith struggles early on, seeing him benched wouldn't be a major surprise. Smith should be taken as a QB2 right now due to the upside we know he can produce. If you are in a Superflex league and take him as your second QB, you should plan on having another option in case he is to be benched.

Our consensus projections for Smith in the 2024 season would be: 319 completions, 3549 yards, 22 touchdowns, 12 interceptions through the air, and 35 carries for 151 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.
