MJ Lenderman‘s anticipated new album Manning Fireworks is about a month away, and today he’s shared its third single, “Joker Lips.” It’s a twangy, pedal-steel-infused alt-country song with that laid-back, shaggy, instant-classic feel that’s become MJ’s trademark. The song is “about feeling pushed out by everyone else,” a press release notes, and it comes with a Ben Turok-directed video of MJ and his band The Wind performing in an overgrown area of the Western North Carolina mountainside. Weezer followed their most recent LP, 2021’s Van Weezer, with a series of four seasonal EPs, SZNZ: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, in 2022. They were planning to give the series a box set release, which they announced on the first anniversary of Spring in March of 2023, but the updates stop there. The band’s assistant and “unofficial fifth member” Karl Koch has now revealed that the box set isn’t happening. In a post on the Weezerpedia Discord server, he wrote, “ok official word: i just learned the SZNZ box was in fact cancelled, im sorry to confirm. Apparently high cost vs. not expecting enough sales to make it work. Feels kinda like the Broadway cancel thing… just letting SZNS be ‘as is’, and enjoy.”

Denver punks Public Opinion have announced that they’ll follow a string of great singles and EPs with their first full-length album, Painted On Smile, due September 6 via Convulse Records (pre-order). It was co-produced by past-collaborators Ian Shelton (of Militarie Gun) and Taylor Young (of Twitching Tongues and God’s Hate and producer for tons of bands, including Militarie Gun), and vocalist Kevin Hart says, “We really wanted to try and expand the sound of the band more. That early 2000s stuff like The Strokes, The Hives, and Bloc Party was really important to us when we were kids, and I think this time we let a lot more of that infiltrate into what we were doing, and we ended up stumbling on more of our own sound.”

Long-running Michigan experimental, ethereal group His Name is Alive are getting a 6-LP box set featuring their three excellent early-’90s albums for 4AD. Titled How Ghosts Affect Relationships: 1990-1993, it will be out September 27 exclusively through the 4AD webstore and Bandcamp. They’ve also announced a few fall tour dates which are listed below.

Jessica Pratt released one of our favorite albums of 2024 so far, Here In The Pitch, in May, and she’s nearing the end of the summer leg of her tour supporting it, which stopped in NYC last week for a pair of sold out shows at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday and Thursday (7/24 and 7/25). We went on night two, which started with an opening set from @ (June McDoom opened night one). Explaining it in an Instagram story, they called it a “5 person setup with drums, bass, acoustic & electric guitar, cello, flute, melodica and a bunch of vocal harmonies. The set is about half mind palace music stuff, a track from the EP reimagined in a shreddy prog way, and 3-4 new unreleased songs that’ll be on the next album.” They told the Bowery Ballroom crowd that it was the biggest room they’d played yet, and emphasized that they really wanted it to sound good. It sounded fantastic, with sublime vocal harmonies mingling with gently ornamented folk.
