Day 5 of the 2024 Paris Olympics is underway with yet another impressive set of finalists on hand.
The morning slate is quite short on Wednesday, featuring just three heats, but the afternoon is jam-packed with five finals and three semifinals. Of the races, Katie Ledecky's 1,500-meter freestyle will be the highlight of the afternoon.
Ledecky is arguably the greatest female swimmer in USA and world history. She can add yet another gold medal to her collection on Wednesday. She holds both the world and olympic records in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
China's Pan Zhanle will be another major name to watch as he competes in the 100-meter freestyle. He set the world record in February 2024 and the olympic record on July 26, 2024 in Paris.
Leon Marchand will race in the 200-meter breaststroke final. He claimed the 400-meter IM gold medal in dominant fashion a few days prior.
The women's 100-meter freestyle and men's 200-meter butterfly will kick off Wednesday's afternoon action. Races begin at 2:30 p.m. ET. Three semifinals will take place among the five finals.

2:52 p.m.: Summer McIntosh beats out Regan Smith in the first semifinal. Second round is coming up.
2:48 p.m.: The women's 200-meter butterfly semifinals are taking place now.
2:45 p.m.: Marchand set a new olympic record at 1:51.21, beating Milak's record set in the 2021 Tokyo Games.
2:43 p.m.: A stunner in France! Leon Marchand wins the 200-meter butterfly with an incredible last 50 meters. He overtook Kristof Milak, the world record holder, in the final 50.
2:39 p.m.: Next up is the men's 200-meter butterfly.
2:35 p.m.: Wow! Sarah Sjoestroem narrowly wins 100-meter freestyle, beating out Torri Huske and Siobhan Bernadette Haughey. Gretchen Walsh, who finished eighth, was 0.88 seconds off of first place.
2:34 p.m.: Women's 100-meter freestyle is underway.
2:26 p.m.: The finals are almost set to begin at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Events begin at 2:30 p.m. ET.
12:52 p.m.: For some context on how dominant Ledecky has been in the 1,500-meter freestyle, she hasn't lost the race in 14 years.
12:16 p.m.: The women's 100-meter freestyle kicks off the afternoon schedule. Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan and Team USA's Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske are notable names in the race.
12:07 p.m.: Katie Ledecky is the main story of the afternoon slate in Paris. She races in the 1,500-meter freestyle at roughly 3:13 p.m. ET.
11:04 a.m.: The women's 200-meter breaststroke, men's 200-meter backstroke and women's 200-meter butterfly had heats this morning.
11:02 a.m.: Qualifying heats have concluded in Paris. It was a short morning session as just three sets of heats took place.

Olympic swimming begins at 5 a.m. ET each day from July 27-Aug. 3. There will only be heats in the morning session. Every day will have an afternoon session that begins at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Aug. 4 is the final day of competition and will only feature an afternoon session with five finals races.

Olympic swimming begins on Saturday, July 27, and goes until Sunday, Aug. 4.
Swimmers begin at 5 a.m. ET each morning with heats that run until 2:30 p.m. ET when the afternoon session begins. The afternoon features semifinal and final races.
Aug. 4 will not have any morning races and will feature four finals in the afternoon.
