Stephen A. Smith Insists the Olympic Opening Ceremony Will Have a Significant Impact On the U.S. Election

Stephen A. Smith on Monday formed an unorthodox theory about the Olympic opening ceremony having a significant impact on the U.S. presidential election.

The ceremony has been at the center of many discussions about the Olympic following one controversial scene. In that scene, several characters — including some dressed in drag — were standing behind a long table. One painted, painted in blue and half-naked, was actually sitting on the table. Some have interpreted the scene as mocking Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper,” but ceremony designer Thomas Jolly has insisted it was a reference to the Greek God Dionysus.

On The Stephen A. Smith Show , Smith explained why he thinks the ceremony — hosted in France and designed by the French — could harm the Democratic Party in November.

“I’m a conservative with my dollars. I’m liberal every other way,” Smith said. “I’m liberal. I get it. I’m cool; but I know tens of millions of conservatives won’t be, and there’s an election coming up.

“When people go to the polls… there’s usually one overlapping, dominant issue that influences who they vote for. So what if, all of a sudden, Roe v. Wade, immigration, and the economy suddenly didn’t become the priority that religion is? What if folks decided to go to the polls because, ‘I either love what I saw,’ or, ‘I can’t stand what I saw’? You ever think about that? I don’t think they did, but the conservatives did everywhere; and who knows how they’ll react to it.”
