Simone Biles Wasn't Playing Around When She Seemingly Shaded Her 2020 Tokyo Teammate MyKayla Skinner

Diehard gymnastics fans know that MyKayla Skinner had a habit over the years of stepping into controversies — this latest scandal isn’t anything new. Over the years, the Utah athlete didn’t seem to think about how her sometimes cruel words or actions would impact her teammates. After winning team gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Simone Biles seemed to use an Instagram caption to have the final say in the ongoing feud.

“lack of talent, lazy, olympic champions ❤️🥇🇺🇸,” wrote the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history in her post, which included snapshots of Team USA celebrating their victory. Suni Lee, Hezly Rivera, Jade Carey, and Jordan Chiles looked ecstatic as they held the American flag and leaped across the floor exercise mat. Biles’ caption appeared to be a clap black from Skinner’s deleted YouTube video (View it HERE .) about the athletes competing at the Olympic Trials in early July. “Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and the depth just isn’t like what it used to be. Just notice like, I mean, obviously a lot of girls don’t work as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic,” she critically said. Skinner was at the 2020 Tokyo Games with Biles, Carey, Chiles, and Lee, so it seemed like a very pointed shot at their skills.

Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles of Team United States celebrate after winning the gold medal during the Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Team Final on day four of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Bercy Arena on July 30, 2024 in Paris, France.

Biles added a snarky post on Threads that gymnastics fans understood was aimed at Skinner. “not everyone needs a mic and a platform,” she wrote — and the first shot was fired. The feud didn’t end there because Biles and her teammates quickly unfollowed Skinner, who had to issue an apology. The retired gymnast posted on Instagram on July 6, “It was not my intention to offend or disrespect any of the athletes or take away from their hard work,” her message said. “Your hard work and dedication has paid off and I congratulate each and every one of you. “ That mea culpa, which came days after the original offense, didn’t land well with Biles. And on July 30, she got in the last word once and for all.

Other Olympic athletes supported Biles’ comment which clearly cast Skinner out of the inner gymnastics circle. Chiles chimed in, “and that’s on periodt!!” Laurie Hernandez, Biles’ 2016 Olympics teammate added, “LMAOOOO I LOVE YALL.” 2008 All-Around Olympics gold-medal winner Nastia Liukin wrote, “micdrop.” And McKayla Maroney, who was a part of the “Fierce Five” 2012 London team reminded everyone that there are two people with the same name out there — and she’s not the one spreading the unfair criticism. “It doesn’t get more iconic than this.. She f’d around n found out fr. Feels like I need to apologize just to redeem my first name,” Maroney noted.

Skinner has been given a pass over and over again, but there might be no coming back from this one. In 2016, she was named the alternate for the Rio Olympics and some of her fans took issue with that. When the official snapshot of the team came out, one of her followers superimposed Skinner’s face over 2012 Olympics All-Around gold medalist Gabby Douglas’ face. Skinner controversially retweeted it to her Twitter followers, which many felt was a microaggression against the Black gymnast. All seemed to be forgiven by 2021 with the women, who developed a friendly relationship and toured together on Biles’ Gold Over America Tour. However, that goodwill seems to have run its course and Skinner finds herself not only out with Biles but with the gymnastics community at large.
