Gerard Garcia Returns to Form With "Back At It"

    By Ian Greenwood,

Freeskier Gerard Garcia is once again doing things on his own terms. For several years, an injury and a stint as a ski instructor prevented him from pushing his skiing. This winter, that changed, resulting in the recently released Back At It , which chronicles Garcia's return to form. Check it out below.

The creation of Back At It isn’t Garcia’s only noteworthy accomplishment from this past ski season. In March, he attempted a triple before a crowd gathered at Whistler’s Peak Express that, for a lack of a better descriptor, was horrifying.

I don’t mean that in a bad way—far from it. But watching someone chuck a triple off Waterfall—a cliff below the infamous Air Jordan double-stager—isn’t something I had on my 2023-2024 winter bingo card. It was one of those tricks that if you told someone you were planning to do it, they’d probably laugh you out of the room.

Tap the video below to see for yourself.

Dropping jaws seems to be Garcia’s M.O. these days, though. He’s clearly hungry to get his name out there and has a penchant for adrenaline buzzes. When he isn’t skiing, he busies himself with an equally gnarly sport: BASE jumping. To learn more about Garcia’s new edit and what he plans to do next, we tapped him for a quick interview.

Gerard Garcia, 'Back At It' Interview

It looks like you started with park skiing before getting into the big mountain scene. What was that pivot like for you?

"It is true that I grew up in the park, and my beginnings are there. But I have always liked freeride too; as a child, I participated in some competitions on the Freeride Junior Tour. However, when I joined the Spanish national freeski team, I spent a few years dedicating myself solely to freestyle. Now that I don't compete and have no commitments, I like doing both, although big mountain calls me more and more each time."

Speaking of pivots, you're originally from Catalunya. What prompted the journey to Whistler Blackcomb and British Columbia?

"As I mentioned before, I like to do freestyle and freeride, and Whistler has it all. It has an amazing park and many freeride opportunities, as well as all the surrounding backcountry. For me, it's one of the most complete resorts in the world."

What's the story behind Back At It ? I was already impressed during the first half, but the next thing I knew, you were chucking triples in Blackcomb Park—you managed to pack a lot into one edit.

"Since I left the national team, I spent a few years dedicating myself to being a ski instructor, and there have been several seasons where I didn't have time to ski for myself. Two seasons ago, I decided to save enough in the summer so I could ski in the winter without working. That was when I went to Whistler for the first time—2022/23—but I got injured and couldn't ski much. So this past season is the first time I could take skiing more seriously since I left the Spanish team in 2017. That's why the name Back At It."

In addition to all this skiing, you're also a BASE jumper. How'd that start?

"I decided I wanted to do BASE jumping one day after watching a video of Shane McConkey doing ski BASE. I decided that I wanted to do that, too. Last year, I started skydiving, and this spring, I started BASE jumping. I hope to do some ski BASE this winter season."

What are your summer plans? More skiing?

"Since I returned from Whistler this last spring, I went to Switzerland to work as a welder, and on weekends I did BASE jumping whenever I could. A few days ago, I came to Chile to freeride. It's my first time skiing in the southern hemisphere, and so far, it's been incredible; we skied inside the crater of the Puyehue volcano. At the beginning of September, I will return to Switzerland to keep working, climbing, and BASE jumping until winter arrives and I go back to Whistler."

Finally, with Back At It out in the world, what's next for you? More edits? Bigger lines? Another triple cork?

"My future plans are to improve as much as I can as a skier. Ski more challenging lines faster and jump bigger cliffs. Introduce BASE jumping into some ski lines and also improve in the park as much as I can. Although I would love to, I don't have any project to film an edit like Back At It in the short term. But I do post content on Instagram whenever I can."
