Who is Sophia Smith's boyfriend? Meet USWNT star's fiancee, Cardinals' WR Michael Wilson

Sophia Smith has had quite the start to her Olympic career.

The U.S. women's national team forward has emerged as one of the most valuable players on Emma Hayes' squad this tournament, combining with Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman to produce one of the competition's most feared attacking tridents.

With two goals and one assist so far, Smith finds herself in contention for the tournament's golden boot prize. And based on her stunning showcase in Sunday's 4-1 win against Germany, it appears she's only just getting started.

Smith is no stranger to athletic feats. She's made a career out of them, first at Stanford, then with NWSL's Portland Thorns and now with USWNT. She's not the only one. So too has her fiancé, Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson.

Here's the rundown on Wilson, his relationship with Smith and his budding football career.

    Who is Sophia Smith's boyfriend?

Smith is engaged to Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Wilson. The pair started dating in Jan. 2019. It was a match made in heaven given their athletic backgrounds: Smith starred on Stanford's soccer team, while Wilson was a standout Cardinal football player.

Wilson was a highly-touted talent, earning four-star billing after impressing at Chaminade (CA). He appeared predestined for athletic greatness — his aunt played for New Zealand's soccer team — and after enrolling at Stanford, Wilson was immediately thrust into a contributor role.

Wilson's freshman year saw him play limited but valuable minutes with David Shaw's squad. His sophomore year proved to be a breakout; Wilson tallied 56 receptions for 672 yards and five touchdowns, emerging as one of the Cardinal's top options at his position. He looked poised to surpass those marks his junior campaign until he saw his season crumble due to a foot injury.

With two years of eligibility remaining — Wilson, like many others, was granted an additional year due to the COVID-19 pandemic — the star pass-catcher hoped to make his mark. Injuries proved a real obstacle, however, with Wilson failing to play a full season in either of his final two campaigns. He did record 26 catches for 418 yards and four touchdowns in just six games with Stanford in 2022, however.

Smith and Wilson have remained thick as thieves since making things official, with both offering support for one another as they climb up their respective career ladders. For Wilson, that meant tracking Smith's performances from afar and lending praise to her when it was needed.

Smith has more than returned the favor for her partner, celebrating with Wilson after the Cardinals made him their third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Earlier this year, Smith and Wilson took their relationship to another level. Wilson proposed to his longtime girlfriend, renting out the Peninsula Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon to make it happen. Talk about going the extra mile.

    Michael Wilson stats

Wilson was quite effective in his maiden NFL season, emerging as a formidable secondary target in Kyler Murray's offense. He had a handful of explosive displays, including a two-touchdown showing against the 49ers and a six-catch, 95-yard flourish against Seattle. He's expected to receive even more touches in 2024, especially with lead pass-catcher Hollywood Brown headed to Kansas City.

Below is a look at Wilson's figures as a Cardinals rookie last year.

Owens is set to make $2.25 million in 2024, having signed a two-year, $4.75 million deal with the Bears in the offseason. His deal sees him receive an average annual value (AAV) of $2.375 million. Per Spotrac, Owens' salary will increase to $2.525 million in 2025.
