JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson (R-Miss.) announced that the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC) will begin accepting a new round of applications for its Wild Hog Control Program (WHCP).

The application period will begin on Thursday, August 1 and will close on Thursday, August 15. All Mississippi counties are eligible for the application period.

Through the WHCP, MDAC provides “smart” wild hog traps to landowners and managers for the control of wild hogs on private agricultural and forestry lands in Mississippi.

Extra day added to 2024 Mississippi State Fair

“Wild hogs are a huge threat to our farms and natural resources across the state,” said Gipson. “MDAC’s Wild Hog Control Program staff are dedicated to assisting farmers and private land managers in the battle against these destructive animals. The most effective trapping equipment is used in our trap loan program, and the program has resulted in great success.”

Applications must be completed and submitted online . Submitted applications will be evaluated based on the number of acres available for trapping, historical agricultural losses caused by wild hogs on the property and current trapping efforts on the property.

According to MDAC, the traps will be available for one-month intervals, dependent upon use and success. One trap per 500 acres is recommended, depending on landscape and land use.
