Selena Gomez’s love life has been the subject of public discourse and speculation ever since her late teens. Now that she’s dating record producer Benny Blanco, questions of whether they’ll get engaged are keeping content creators on TikTok busy—and Gomez has responded to one who claimed her younger self would “never” have made that commitment.

A fan shared a video of Gomez when she was younger, and captioned it, “I know and so do you that at the time she would never have gotten engaged to Benny, she was in her IT GIRL era.” The Only Murders in the Building star responded, writing, “Kinda makes me laugh because I was so depressed back then lol.”

We’re not sure exactly what time period Gomez is referring to, but she has spoken openly about her mental health over the years. In 2020, she revealed she’d been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2022, she explained how hesitant she was in going public with her diagnosis.

“Because I have the platform I have, it’s kind of like I’m sacrificing myself a little bit for a greater purpose. I don’t want that to sound dramatic, but I almost wasn’t going to put this out. God’s honest truth, a few weeks ago, I wasn’t sure I could do it,” she said.

“I’m going to be very open with everybody about this: I’ve been to four treatment centers,” she continued. “I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.”
