Child tax credit payments: NY to send 1M families bonus checks. How it'll work

More than 1 million New York families with children will soon get checks from Albany to supplement a child credit they claimed on their taxes this year.

The state is set to begin mailing payments for up to $330 per child to eligible families on Monday, and plans to finish by end of the August. The amounts will vary based on household income and how much each family deducted from its state income taxes through the Empire State Child Credit.

Who's eligible? Do I need to apply?

Any family who got at least a $100 credit will automatically be mailed an added payment. There's no need to apply.

The Empire State Child Credit is offered to parents with low or modest incomes — up to $110,000 in adjusted gross income for a couple or $75,000 for one person. It amounts to either 33% of a parent's federal child tax credit or $100 per child, whichever is more. Adjusted gross income is a household's total earnings minus pension contributions, student loan interest and certain other expenses.

The upcoming supplemental payments will be based on a percentage of a family's state credit this year, ranging from 25% for someone earning more than $50,000 to 100% for someone earning less $10,000.

Where is the money coming from?

The state budgeted $350 million in April for the supplemental credit payments after Assembly Democrats proposed them during budget talks. The state had given out similar bonuses in 2022.

“We’re putting money back in the pockets of more than a million New Yorkers because this administration delivers for working families,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in announcing the new round of checks on Monday .
