Hospitals spent about 7% of annual pharmaceutical spend on infectious disease treatments, according to a Vizient report released July 30. To evaluate drug expenditure in healthcare, Vizient collected medication spend data from its pharmacy program clients, including hospital, non-acute and pediatric care providers. The information below spans from April 2023 to March 2024.

A rare, but fatal genetic disease that accelerates aging in children, progeria, could soon have a cure, The New York Times reported July 24. The disease affects only 1 in every 4 million to 8 million live births, and causes early signs of aging from balding and wrinkles, to arthritis, cataracts, tough skin, and stiff joints. The prevalence of the disease overall is about 1 in 18 million to 20 million worldwide, according to the Progeria Research Foundation, with about 400 children living with the condition presently — 18 of whom are in the U.S.
