Dozens of meteors zip across 'Northern Lights' in video from Colorado mountain town

In case you haven't heard, this week has been an active one when it comes to the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights – and this period of increased aurora activity just so happens to be occurring at the same time as the popular Perseids meteor shower.

While mapping from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center doesn't include Colorado among the spots where the aurora is visible to the naked eye, some have noted that the aurora can still be seen in the Centennial State by those in a remote area with a lack of city lights. Having a camera with a long exposure time can also help when it comes to spotting and capturing the stunning natural phenomenon.

Photographer Jenny Heckmann of North Creek Photography recently shared a particularly cool shot on X.com , capturing the Borealis Aurora and the Perseids Meteor shower in a timelapse above Pagosa Springs in southwest Colorado.

Pinks and purples are seen in the night sky while dozens of meteors zip by. Watch the clip below:

If you missed the aurora or meteor shower in recent days, you're in luck. The aurora might be visible for a couple more days this week and the Perseids don't hit their peak until mid-August . Head somewhere dark on a night with no cloud cover for the best chance of spotting both.
