FDA Raises Alarm Over Lead Contamination in Ground Cinnamon. Multiple Brands and Retailers Implicated in Widespread Public Health Concern

Fort Lauderdale, FL—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued multiple warnings regarding elevated levels of lead in various brands of ground cinnamon. This alarming discovery has prompted recalls and heightened consumer awareness about the potential dangers of lead contamination in food products.

The agency is collaborating with international partners, as some of the implicated brands are imported from countries such as India, Mexico, and Pakistan.

Lead Contamination Poses Serious Health Risks
Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can accumulate in the body over time, even at low levels of exposure. Children are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can cause irreversible damage to their developing brains and nervous systems, leading to developmental delays, learning difficulties, and behavioral problems. In adults, lead exposure can increase the risk of high blood pressure, kidney damage, and reproductive problems.

    Brands and Retailers Affected
The FDA has identified the following brands and retailers as having cinnamon products that may contain elevated levels of lead:

    • Family Dollar stores: The discount retailer has issued a voluntary recall of its Family Dollar brand ground cinnamon products due to potential lead contamination.
    • El Chilar: The FDA has detected high levels of lead in El Chilar brand ground cinnamon products.
    • Marcum: Marcum brand cinnamon products have been found to contain elevated levels of lead.
    • SWAD: SWAD brand cinnamon products have been recalled due to potential lead contamination.
    • Supreme Tradition: Supreme Tradition brand cinnamon products have been found to contain high levels of lead.
    • Compania Indillor Orientale: The FDA has detected elevated levels of lead in Compania Indillor Orientale brand cinnamon products.
    • ALB Flavor Shahzada: ALB Flavor Shahzada brand cinnamon products have been recalled due to potential lead contamination.
    • Spice Class: Spice Class brand cinnamon products have been found to contain high levels of lead.
    • La Frontera: La Frontera brand cinnamon products have been recalled due to potential lead contamination.

Testing by state programs and confirmed by the FDA found lead levels ranging from a little over 2 parts per million (ppm) to about 7 ppm in most of these spices. The El Servidor brand, in particular, had a lead concentration of 20 ppm.

The Dangers of Lead in Food
Lead is a toxic metal that can cause serious health problems, especially in children. Even low levels of lead exposure can affect a child's development, causing learning disabilities, behavioral issues, and reduced IQ. In adults, lead exposure can lead to cardiovascular problems, decreased kidney function, and reproductive issues3.

The FDA has set a limit of 1 ppm of lead in candy likely to be consumed by small children, but there is currently no specific limit for lead in spices. The American Spice Trade Association recommends no more than 2 ppm of lead in bark spices such as cinnamon.

    How Lead Contaminates Spices
Lead can enter the food supply through various pathways:

    • Natural Sources: Lead can be present in soil and water, which are absorbed by plants.
    • Environmental Pollution: Industrial pollution can contaminate crops and water sources.
    • Manufacturing Processes: Lead can be introduced during the processing, storage, or shipping of spices.
    • Adulteration: In some cases, lead is deliberately added to spices to enhance color or weight.

    Avoiding Lead-Contaminated Spices
Consumers can take several steps to minimize the risk of lead exposure from spices:

    • Check Recalls: Stay informed about FDA recalls and alerts. Dispose of any products that have been identified as contaminated.
    • Buy Reputable Brands: Purchase spices from well-known and trusted brands that adhere to safety standards.
    • Inspect Packaging: Look for signs of tampering or damage to packaging, which could indicate contamination.
    • Consult Healthcare Providers: If you suspect exposure to lead, especially in children, seek medical advice promptly.

What to Do If You've Purchased Affected Products
If you've purchased cinnamon products from any of the affected brands or retailers, the FDA recommends that you:

    1. Stop using the product: Immediately stop using the product and discard any remaining cinnamon.
    2. Return the product: Return the product to the place of purchase for a refund or exchange.
    3. Contact the manufacturer: Contact the manufacturer or retailer for more information about the recall and any steps you can take to minimize exposure.

    Going Forward
The FDA is actively working to address the issue of lead contamination in spices through targeted testing, public health alerts, and recommendations for recalls of contaminated products. The agency is also collaborating with state health departments and industry stakeholders to develop strategies for preventing future contamination and ensuring the safety of the spice supply.
