A firehouse divided cannot stand, so it’s safe to say that the 126 will be in hot water when 9-1-1: Lone Star returns for Season 5 on Monday, Sept. 23 (8/7c).

That’s because, with Judd stepping down as lieutenant, best friends Paul and Marjan will soon find themselves fighting for a shot at the vacant position.

“It’s been really cool to see how that plays out,” Brian Michael Smith told TVLine’s Keisha Hatchett at San Diego Comic-Con. “They’re such best friends, so to throw this new tension in there has been really exciting to see. … These are two very competitive individuals going for something they really believe in, so it’s going to be exciting to see who the best one is for the job.” (Hey, we’re just glad we don’t have to make the decision ourselves.)

Fortunately for Paul, he has a strong support system backing him up, including his new girlfriend. “Things are going strong” between Paul and Asha, Smith confirmed, adding that she’s someone he knows he can call on for help who also understands the complicated dynamics of the firehouse.

And while Judd is merely stepping away from the 126, his wife is stepping away entirely; it was recently revealed that actress Sierra McClain is not returning for Season 5 , and Smith said that her absence will definitely be felt by fans.

“It’s been different with Sierra not being with us production days,” Smith admitted, “but we’re still in group chats together and still maintain the conversations and connections. … It’ll be really interesting to see how the characters, especially Judd, navigate not having Grace in his physical presence.”
