ARKANSAS, Ark (KNWA/KFTA) — A recent report from a global nonprofit highlights a significant disparity in wages across Arkansas, revealing that nearly one-third of the state’s workers earn less than $17 per hour. This figure stands in contrast to the $19 per hour deemed necessary to cover basic living expenses for a single individual without children, according to the MIT Living Wage Calculator.

Kendall Ross, associate vice chancellor of Economic Development at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, discussed the factors contributing to Arkansas’ lower-than-average wages. Ross attributed this wage gap to a combination of issues, including limited educational opportunities and fewer high-paying jobs in the state.

“Several factors keep the average wage in Arkansas lower than the national average,” Ross said. “A lack of higher education and job opportunities are significant contributors.”

For those struggling to make ends meet, Ross offered practical advice. He recommended budgeting carefully, avoiding excessive use of credit cards, and leveraging personal skills to find jobs that better match one’s qualifications. Additionally, he suggested considering side gigs to supplement income.

Despite the lower wages, Ross emphasized that the cost of living in Arkansas is considerably lower than in many other states.

“Wages are lower here,” Ross acknowledged. “But it’s important to remember that the cost of living is lower too. You can buy a home here for about 30 to 40% less than you would pay on the East Coast.”
