DALLAS (KDAF) — Minimum wage workers in Texas need to work nearly 24 hours just to afford groceries, according to a new study from the United Way of the National Capital Area.

This study highlights a stark reality for many Americans, but one that hits close to home in the Lone Star State.

The team of researchers analyzed median incomes and minimum wages to gauge how long residents in each state need to work to afford groceries. They calculated weekly and yearly grocery costs using recent census data and applied personal finance benchmarks to determine the percentage of income allocated for groceries. This allowed them to find the number of work hours required to cover groceries and identify any annual deficits.

In Texas, minimum wage earners need to clock nearly a full day, 23:53 hours, to afford groceries, ranking as the second state where minimum wage workers must work the longest. Georgia took the top spot, with minimum wage workers needing to clock 23:56 hours.

On average, wage earners need to work 7:50 hours to put food on the table, and families face a $3,444.31 annual deficit between income and income needed to afford groceries.

I've noticed that at 16.00 per hour, it's extremely hard to have enough for my family, being I'm a single mother of four! Rent, Ccar payment, insurance, gas, utilities, groceries, phones, internet, household needs alone I live paycheck to paycheck balancing everything is horrible!!
