SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Duke Energy is proposing a change which would lower electricity bills for some customers.

The company said they are seeking to reduce their annual adjustment for fuel cost in South Carolina.

The change would affect Duke Energy Carolinas customers, which includes about 660,000 households and businesses, primarily in the Upstate.

As a result, Duke Energy said the average monthly residential and commercial bill would decrease by 13.8% while the average industrial customer’s bill would decrease by 16.2%.

A residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month would see their bill decrease by $19.60 from $142.23 to $122.63, according to numbers provided by Duke Energy.

If approved by the Public Service Commission of South Carolina, the decrease would begin in November.

The company said the decrease will “significantly offset” the previously announced base rate increase which was approved by the Public Service Commission in early July.

That base rate increase goes into affect in August.
