Chrissy Teigen has always been open with her fans about the struggles she's faced as a parent, and now her followers are rallying to support the mother-of-four following an update on the health of her 6-year-old son, Miles .

In a statement shared to Instagram, Teigen revealed that Miles has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

"A lot of you noticed something a little special about a photo I posted a few days ago — Luna , Miles and I celebrating Simone and team USA," Teigen wrote.

"Miles had his arm up, and soooo [sic] many of you reached out to say the most beautiful and incredible words I have ever witnessed on this platform. You noticed his type-1 diabetes monitor and extended so much love and encouragement in every way possible. I was, and am, so blown away by the kindness of this community, already," she continued.

"A couple weeks ago, our Miles was sick, in the hospital, with a terrible case of shigella, an intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food or water. A lot of his friends were also sick with it, as they went to the same camp and well, it happens! But the doctors knew something else was off about his blood tests," the Lip Sync Battle alum continued.

"I've learned since then that this is how so many young children end up being diagnosed with type-1 — going to the hospital for something completely different. After more testing, we learned he is in the 'honeymoon period' of a lifetime of T1," Teigen explained. "Last night we gave him his first shot of insulin and here we go! A different, new world for us and we are certainly learning so much on the fly."

Teigen noted that "things could be so much worse!! So many parents around the world are going through unfathomable things that I could never imagine. I tell myself this every time we get a red alert blasted to our phones. And we are so blessed to have so much help."

The model also thanked fans for their thoughtful messages, saying that "it helps Miles so much to know so many other people are going through the same thing and he is not alone."

Commenters who had personal experience with diabetes, in particular, had plenty of words of encouragement for the family.

"I’ve had type 1 for 18 years and I can promise you it gets easier every single year," wrote one Instagram user. "The learning curve is steep and the beginning can be so hard, but this community is unbeatable. He’s going to grow up to be so kind and compassionate towards others and will also become a master of advocating for himself and the people he loves! And, just in case any rude people try to tell him that diabetes will limit what he can eat or do, I can promise you that none of that is true. You can do anything you set your mind to as a diabetic- you really can! ❤️"

In addition to Miles and Luna, 8, Teigen and her husband, John Legend , share son Wren Alexander , 13 months, and daughter Esti Maxine , 18 months.
