(KRON) — The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has extended an air quality advisory through Thursday, August 1, due to persistent wildfire smoke from the Pedro Fire and other California wildfires.

Smoke from these fires is expected to continue affecting air quality throughout the Bay Area. Residents may notice hazy skies and the smell of smoke, particularly at higher elevations.

"Air quality is really a moving target. It has everything to do with containment and also the weather pattern," said KRON4 meteorologist Kyla Grogan.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to remain in the Moderate category. However, given the unpredictable nature of wildfire smoke, conditions can change rapidly, the BAAQMD said.

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on real-time smoke pollution levels. Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter and harmful pollutants that can be a health risk, even with brief exposure. You can check the air quality in your area with BAAQMD's map .

The BAAQMD advises Bay Area residents to protect themselves by staying indoors with windows and doors closed when possible, especially during high smoke periods. Setting AC units and car vents to recirculate can help prevent outside air from entering indoor spaces. Using indoor air filtration systems or visiting locations with filtered air, such as libraries or malls, can also help reduce exposure.

Exposure to wildfire smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, leading to coughing, scratchy throats, and irritated sinuses. Individuals with asthma, emphysema, or COPD may experience worsened symptoms. The elderly, children, and those with respiratory illnesses are particularly vulnerable and should take extra precautions.
