New York Giants take advantage of rival's decision to get better at a premium position

The offseason has been filled with moves for the New York Giants. They added an offensive lineman to start the week. That was a notable addition in Greg Van Roten. Now, the Giants are addressing a defensive depth need.

New York is grabbing a player at a position of need after a division foe let him go recently.

Giants claim former Eagles DB off waivers

The Giants claimed cornerback Mario Goodrich off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Mike Garafolo.

Goodrich is still just 24 years old. He became a College Football Playoff champion in 2018 with the Clemson Tigers. The CB holds legitimate NFL size at 6'0 and 186 pounds.

During the 2022 NFL Draft, Goodrich was projected to be an early day three selection. Instead, he did not get drafted. That was a surprise to many.

Mario Goodrich is a good pro prospect, he's got ideal length, is physical, an excellent tackler, has nice coverage instincts and mirrors receivers well, he however has a slight frame and so may need to put on weight to stay injured free. He also doesn't have the elite speed you look for in a top corner - despite that, we think he has the skills to be a starter at the next level given he's not thrown in right away.

Pro teams should seriously look at drafting Goodrich with a view to converting him to free safety - he, at least to us looks more suited to that role and has more upside than the majority of the safety prospects in this year's class. Expect Goodrich to hear his name called in the middle of the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Goodrich could probably play safety as well. He's not the best athlete from a speed, agility standpoint, so we will see if New York plays him at safety or cornerback.

Regardless, the Giants took advantage of a move by Philly to try to add talent in the secondary. New York needs plenty more of that on their roster.
