(WHTM) — With National Poll Worker Recruitment Day being Aug. 1, Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt encouraged people to sign up to volunteer.

Schmidt attended a poll workers’ training seminar Wednesday afternoon that was held in Philadelphia.

“As someone who has worked in elections for many years, I can tell you that serving as a poll worker is one of the most rewarding acts of civic engagement you can perform,” Schmidt said. “Elections are the most fundamental part of our representative democracy, and they couldn’t happen here in Pennsylvania if it wasn’t for the work of the roughly 45,000 poll workers who staff more than 9,000 voting locations across the Commonwealth each Election Day.”

In order to be a poll worker, you must be registered to vote, but high school juniors or seniors who are 17-years-old can volunteer as long as they have permission from their school principal or parent. There are two different forms, one for the students and another for the registered voters , that need to be filled out and can be found online.

Poll workers do get paid for their trainings and for their work on Election Day.

More information about becoming a poll worker can be found online and by following #ReadytoVotePA and the Department’s on social media.
