Peacock’s Battlestar Galactica reboot has been grounded: The new take on the iconic sci-fi franchise is no longer in development at the streamer, TVLine has confirmed. (Our sister site Variety first reported the news.)

The reboot was first announced in 2019, before Peacock even launched as a streaming service. Sam Esmail, who created the USA thriller Mr. Robot , was onboard as an executive producer. Derek Simonds ( The Sinner ) was named as the project’s showrunner in January, and Esmail said a few months earlier: “I just read a great outline, and it’s in great shape.” But the reboot never earned a series order at the streamer.

Battlestar Galactica first debuted in 1978 as an ABC series, with humans aboard the titular spaceship battling robots called the Cylons. It starred Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict and Lorne Greene, and it became a cult hit, but it only ran for a single season.

The series was resurrected in 2003 by Syfy (then the Sci-Fi Channel) with a miniseries that became a full-fledged show a year later. With a cast led by Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackoff and Grace Park, this Battlestar Galactica became a fan favorite, running for four seasons and earning 19 Emmy nominations. It also spawned the spinoff Caprica , which ran for one season in 2010.
