Tre’Davious White was a risky free agent signing for the Los Angeles Rams . The former All-Pro cornerback has missed 21 games over his last three seasons, playing in just 10 games in the last two seasons combined. The Rams didn’t have to opt for White. The cornerback had plenty of good options to choose from. They could have gone back to a familiar face and re-signed Ahkello Witherspoon . But the Rams made a deliberate and thoughtful choice to pursue White.

“The Rams just kept calling and kept pressing,” said White. “They really wanted me. If someone’s doing that, that’s a sign.”

“Everything has been pointed up towards the Rams, and these guys have been taking care of me. They have been doing a great job.”

Since signing White, his health hasn’t been a detriment. While other cornerbacks have hit the injured list, White has emerged as the team’s best defensive back and but also has put himself in the place of player-coach. Puka Nacua was asked about working with White on the practice field.

“He’s really really smart. Pre-a stuff, he understands he motions wherever we’re going at line. He’s super aware. Depending on where we’re lined up he knows he can eliminate certain routes. It’s been fun because there are things that I feel like I know are my strengths and they don’t really work against him because he’s thinking the mental game before I ever get to to be a physical player with him. So it’s been super fun.”

Defensive coordinator Chris Shula commented on this idea, in more detail.

Obviously it’s how talented the teachers and seniors are. So the faster you can eliminate routes based on formation, based on splits, it allows them to play faster. It really takes a guy that can process like that to be able to do it, and that’s why Tre White’s a special player.

While the injury risk won’t go away, the Rams did thier due diligence. Signing White to a one year contract allows them to move on without much commitment, but his presence may pay greater dividends with the young players on longer deals.

“That was just the background that we had done on him. He’s been that way since he was at LSU coming out. Les and his staff had remembered him like that.” Shula continued, “We have a bunch of familiar people with the Bills. Guys that played for us. Taylor Rapp , Leonard Floyd , Von Miller .He was close with all those guys. They had nothing but great things to say about him. Guys that coached with the Bills. My uncle actually was with the Bills last year. Great things to say. Ryan Wendell , our O-line coach.

So there’s just a lot of common people. The NFL’s a small fraternity, and all those people say those things about him. Usually that’s the way it turned out, and it has.”
