BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) – Mercer County Airport staff had the chance to honor a vital member of the airport’s history.

On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, airport staff hosted an event honoring the late Commander Henry J. White.

White was inducted into the West Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame during the West Virginia Airport Managers Association Banquet. Commander White, a native of Maryland, was a U.S Naval Academy graduate who served during World War I.

“The significance of being an early pilot and a test pilot for planes and other items. It was the fact that he was also a naval pilot,” said Bill Archer, a Mercer County Commissioner.

The award will be displayed at the Mercer County Airport. White was also a skilled linguist and was fluent in German, which helped him translate German writing for American pilots.
