Why We Need a Longlegs Prequel

Given Longlegsbox office success and the popularity of Nicolas Cage’s character, the movie is ripe for a prequel. While director and writer Osgood Perkins hasn’t commented about further plans concerning the IP, fans are already theorizing about how a future film could explore Longlegs’ past. Here’s why a prequel may be on its way and what form it could take.

What could a Longlegs prequel look like?

One of the key pieces of evidence that there might be a Longlegs prequel is the amount of backstory not shown in the film. The titular character doesn’t get much screentime and his past as a failed glam rocker isn’t even explained in the movie. Seeing Dale Ferdinand Cobble’s descent into madness and Satanism would make for a very entertaining movie and we can think of no one better than Nicholas Cage to portray that sort of journey.

There would also be an opportunity to put a further twist on the original movie. Lee Harker is an unreliable narrator, and there are plenty of unanswered questions by the time the credits roll, like:

    • Why did Carrie Anne Camera survive Longlegs’ attack and how did she know Lee?
    • How did Longlegs live in the basement of Lee’s house for decades without her knowing?
    • Where’s Lee’s father, and why did Longlegs break his MO by targeting her?

A film told from Longlegs’ perspective could change our entire outlook on the original by calling Lee’s version of events into doubt.

Of course, with nothing confirmed, we can only theorize about what a Longlegs prequel may look like. Still, considering the film’s success and Nicolas Cage’s popularity, a prequel exploring the character’s dark origins would likely attract a significant audience. Fans are eager to see more of Dale Ferdinand Cobble’s transformation and the events that led to his sinister persona.
