Olympic star Simone Biles's husband causes outrage - fans say 'divorce him' after savage jibe

Fans of Simone Biles, the American Olympics gymnastics superstar often referred to as the G. O. A. T (greatest of all time) due to her impressive gold medal haul, are calling for her to split from her husband following his controversial comment about their relationship.

The 27-year-old athlete - who appeared to take a brutal swipe at a former teammate today - added another gold to her collection with Team USA on Tuesday and is set to compete in the all-around competition on Thursday.

However, her husband, Jonathan Owens, 29, sparked outrage among Simone's fans when he claimed he was "the catch" in their relationship.

During an interview with The Pivot podcast, the NFL player said: "I'm like, 'Lemme see who this is.' I never really paid attention to gymnastics, so it piqued my curiosity. The first thing that I saw was that she just had a bunch of [ Instagram ] followers. So in my mind I'm like, 'Okay, she's gotta be good'."

He went on to say: "I always say that the men are the catch. I'm like, 'It's kinda early [to commit].' But you know, it happens when you least expect it. When we hung out, we just hit it off instantly. Laughed the whole night."

In April, Simone revealed on the Call Her Daddy podcast that the backlash her husband's comment received had caused her to "break down", with many urging her to leave him.

She said: "I go on Twitter and everybody's like, 'Divorce this man, he's mean.'"

While initially finding the memes "hilarious" the continued 'banter' led to her "breaking down" under the criticism.

The sports star expressed her frustration: "I'm like, 'Why are you guys talking about my husband like this?' You don't know him. You don't know who he is.

"If anybody's met him, they know he's the sweetest guy and will do anything for anybody. Talk about me all you want, but don't come for my family."

However, disregarding her plea, her supporters continued, leading Simone to starkly warn on Instagram: "I'm going to quickly address this, the joke was never a joke! Y'all are blatantly being disrespectful to my relationship and my husband. So I'm gonna go ahead and say this one time. Respectfully, ---- off."

She clarified: "If you keep commenting or tweeting at me I'm just going to block you. Simple as that."
