As one of the warmest summers in New Jersey history winds down, the Garden State is set to welcome a fresh autumn. But will this fall season boast cooler or warmer-than-average temperatures?

Here are some early forecasts:

The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a fall season with below-average temperatures in New Jersey and most of the East Coast.

While September is expected to be warmer than average, starting in October temperatures should begin to cool off, bringing the thermometer to below-average temperatures for that time of the year, the almanac predicts.

Precipitation level should stand below average, which, along with cooler days, might produce bright, stunning fall foliage.

NOAA predicts a warm fall season for New Jersey

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts above-average autumn temperatures for the Northeastern region, including New Jersey.

Precipitation amounts should be slightly above average in New Jersey this fall through December.

Most of the country might see above-average temperatures.

WeatherWorks forecast a warmer fall season for NJ

New Jersey-based forecasting company WeatherWorks predicts the forthcoming fall season will be slightly warmer than previous autumns.

"I would probably lean above average. Mainly because over the last several years, it's been pretty difficult to get a three-month stretch of weather that ends up below average," WeatherWorks meteorologist Kyle Leahy said.

When it comes to precipitation, Leahy expects this year's active hurricane season to increase rainfall totals in New Jersey. While most tropical systems are expected to make landfall in Florida and along the Gulf of Mexico, the moisture from these systems typically travels north, bringing precipitation here.

Rain activity should cease by November, which looks like it's going to be more dry than a typical November.

When does the fall season starts?

In the Northern Hemisphere, fall starts on Sunday, Sept. 22, which is when the autumnal equinox happens.

When is hurricane season?

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but most hurricane activity happens between mid-August and mid-October, according to NOAA.

What is needed for vibrant fall foliage?

Cool, sunny days are what's best for a vibrant fall foliage. Below-average or seasonal-cool temperatures along with little to no precipitation brings out the brightest autumnal foliage, according to Jason Grabosky, forester at Rutgers University.
