Olympic track and field competition will conclude with the highly anticipated men's and women's marathon finals on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11.

The marathon course starts at the Hôtel de Ville and ends on the Esplanade des Invalides. Along the way, runners will be able to take in the sights of iconic monuments of Paris, including the Louvre, Grand Palais, Château de Versailles and the Eiffel Tower.

When planning the route for the marathon, Paris 2024 drew inspiration from the "Women's March" of 1889, when 7,000 Parisian women marched through Paris. The route will also feature some challenging elevation gain and loss for the runners.

On the men's side, one of the biggest rivalries on the track will commence between Ethopia's Kenenisa Bekele and Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge. Bekele is making his return to the Olympics after missing out on the 2016 and Tokyo 2020 games, while Kipchoge is eyeing his third Olympic marathon gold. Leonard Korir, Conner Mantz and Clayton Young will be running for Team USA.

On the women's side, Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa has emerged as a top candidate for gold after setting a world record at last year's Berlin Marathon. Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir won gold in Tokyo, and the Netherlands' Sifan Hassan is also someone to watch. Fiona O'Keeffe, Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm will compete for Team USA.

For the first time in history, the general public will be invited to put themselves in the shoes of Olympians and run on the same route as the elite athletes. Around 20,024 participants will run the same course just hours after the men's Olympic marathon race.
