The controversial fight between Italian Angela Carini and Algerian Imane Khelif, who failed a gender test at last year’s World Championships, ended after 46 seconds.Carini suffered a suspected broken nose before signaling to her corner that she was unable to continue and leaving the ring in tears. Khelif was disqualified from the gold medal match in Delhi in 2023 by the International Boxing Association (IBA) due to “elevated levels of testosterone.”The Italian government and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) expressed “great” concern in the buildup to Carini’s fight in the French capital.“I find it difficult to understand that there is no alignment in the parameters of minimum hormonal values at an international level, which includes the European and world championships and the Olympics. The safety of female and male athletes must be guaranteed,” said Andrea Abodi, Italian Sports Minister. The International Olympic Committee highlighted that Khelif’s passport illustrates that the fighter is female and could compete at the Games.Australian boxing captain Caitlin Parker noted that she “doesn’t agree with them being allowed to compete in sport, especially combat sports.”
