General Hospital star Cameron Mathison's cryptic statement about wife just days before divorce

Cameron Mathison opened up about his wife's mindset just days before the couple announced their decision to split.

The General Hospital star , 54, and his wife Victoria Arevalo, 57, shocked fans on Wednesday when they released a joint statement announcing their divorce . The split comes just four days after the couple celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary.

In a newly-released interview, Cameron gave just days before the announcement, he said Vanessa had been on a "self-exploratory" phase. "It’s like a new chapter for everybody in our life. We’re just trying to figure it all out," he admitted.

Speaking to Us Weekly , the soap star added: "She's really on a self-exploratory kind of phase right now, doing a lot of really cool stuff for her." He said Vanessa had been learning how to play bass and was going back to her modeling career.

Cameron continued: "She's traveling and doing things, and I’m really encouraging that. And yeah, we’re just trying to figure it all out." He also said they were both focusing on "really cherishing each other" and paying attention to one another's needs.

Cameron and Vanessa announced their divorce in a joint statement on Instagram. They said: "After 22 years of marriage, we have made the difficult decision to part ways. We enter this new chapter with deep love, kindness, and respect for each other.

"We hold gratitude in our hearts for the wonderful years we shared together." The statement continued "Our children have been and will continue to be our highest priority, and we will forever share in our devotion and love for them.

"We remain friends, and both wish the best for one another. We sincerely appreciate your respect for our family’s privacy during this transition."

Cameron and Vanessa met each other for the first time as working models in New York City in 1998. They started dating the following the year and married on July 27, 2002. They share two children together - son Lucas, who was born in April 2003, and daughter Leila, born in July 2006.
