A FUMING shopper has slammed the retailer for grossly overcharging them in a poor customer service experience.

After the shopper pointed out the mistake, they were told to recheck the store prices themselves.

“Walmart overcharged on every single item in my cart by over 20% and had the audacity to make me seek out the prices again on store shelves,” the shopper tweeted.

“The attitude has gotten a lot more hostile in the past few weeks. These people make me sick.”

With public complaints, the retailer does make an effort to reach out to consumers online.

However, Walmart has not commented or responded to this post so far.

But as customers continue to struggle, and companies like Walmart are reaching record profits, consumers say mistakes like these are hurting their pockets too much.

The average prices of food and beverages rose 22 to 25 percent in the last four years since the pandemic.

Not to mention, a majority of Americans are financially worse off now than compared to before the start of the pandemic , according to Yahoo! Finance .

In fact, corporate profits now account for the highest share of national income in the last decade, according to the National Bureau of Economic Analysis .

Walmart reported a quarterly profit of $5.1 billion in May, triple the amount it made during the same quarter one year earlier.

    SLIPPERY SCALE

In February, the retailer settled a $45 million class action lawsuit after consumers claimed that Walmart allowed them to buy certain weighted groceries for more than the lowest in-store advertised price.

The lawsuit settlement class includes anyone who purchased weighted goods and bagged citrus in person at a Walmart store between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024.

As defined in the settlement, “weighted goods” refers to variable-weight meat, poultry, pork, and seafood products labeled with a price-embedded bar code and designated by Walmart.

Whereas, “bagged citrus” refers to organic oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, and navel oranges sold in bulk in mesh or plastic bags.

Class members alleged that the retailer’s point-of-sale machines would artificially raise the weight of the weighted goods, causing the total price to be more than the advertised discount.

What to do if you're overcharged

If you are overcharged at a retailer, there are a few ways to get your money back.

If you notice you were charged more than the advertised or posted price, report it to an employee or manager.

Make sure to keep your receipt to show the price difference.

As a shopper, you are entitled to the lowest advertised, posted, or quoted price offered by the store.

If you are charged more than the advertised, posted, or quoted a price, report it to the sales clerk right away. If the sales clerk can’t help, speak to the manager.

Stores must honor a posted price, even if the price has expired.

You are also able to dispute charges with your bank if you notice something suspicious on your statement.

According to Los Angeles County Consumer& Business Affairs

The company denied any accusations of wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.

Class members received a cash payment from the Walmart-weighted groceries settlement.

    • Claimants who attest to buying one to 50 products will receive $10
    • Claimants who purchased 51 to 75 products will receive $15
    • Claimants who purchased 76 up to 100 products will receive $20
    • Claimants who attest to purchasing 101 or more products will receive $25

With growing concerns over inflation, consumers are extra cautious of scams at the grocery store.

Meanwhile, another Walmart shopper has slammed the retailer after apparently being overcharged twice in one month.

And one consumer begged the retailer to remodel after an awkward incident at the store.
