Southampton manager Russell Martin has issued a firm response to Celtic's interest in young Northern Ireland international Shea Charles.

The versatile player, who can operate as a holding midfielder, central defender, or right-back, has been eyed by the Scottish champions for a potential loan deal.

Charles, 20, had a promising debut season at St Mary's, featuring in 38 matches after joining from Manchester City.

    Celtic's interest hits a wall

His performances have caught the attention of Celtic, who are looking to bolster their squad with versatile talent. However, Martin has made it clear that Charles will not be leaving the club any time soon.

"With the squad as it is right now, not a chance," Martin told the Daily Echo . He emphasized the need for more signings at Southampton before any decisions can be made about loaning out players.

The Saints are currently short on reinforcements, with key players like Flynn Downes recently securing a permanent move from West Ham.

Martin also mentioned that the prolonged transfer window complicates planning, allowing bigger clubs to make late moves. Martin remarked:

"The transfer window stupidly, annoyingly, and madly goes on until the end of August, which gives all the bigger clubs a massive advantage. It is what it is. So, yeah, we will bring some people in and assess the situation - but Shea was good tonight (against Oxford United)."

For now, it seems Shea Charles will remain at Southampton as the club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the Premier League season.
