    Beaver County's retail food inspections for July 2024

    Editor’s Note: This is an overview of inspection violations recorded in Beaver County retail food establishments by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Inspections conducted on any given day may not represent the long-term cleanliness of a facility, the state Department of Agriculture notes, and violations recorded at the time of inspection are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving. Violations listed below were deemed significant to the public interest by reporters at The Times, but a full list of each business' violations can be found in the Department of Agriculture's inspection database. Citations may be modified for grammar or reader clarity.

    Freedom Square Diner

    Location: 101 Wagner Road, Monaca

    Inspection Date: 7/25/24

    • 601.11 (A) Equipment, Food Contact Surfaces, Nonfood Contact Surfaces and Utensils
      • Inspector's Comment: Slicer was observed to have dried old food on it, potato cutter was observed to be not cleaned with old food residue on it, and prep cooler has a buildup of black old food residue on it. Facility is unable to clean cooler safely without stopping operations. Cooler is to be cleaned at end of day. Facility did not clean potato cutter before end of inspection, instructed not to use it until it is cleaned.
    • 501.16(A2)(B) Time/Temperature Control for Safety Food, Cold Holding
      • Inspector's Comment: Cheese was held overnight in the prep cooler rail and is currently at 60.1 degrees and 56.4 degrees rather than 41 degrees or below as required. The cheese was discolored compared to the same held in the walk-in cooler. Cheese was discarded for food safety. Agent's thermometer was calibrated during this inspection.
    • 304.14 Wiping Cloths, Use Limitations
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed wiping cloths being used for multiple tasks, wiping food spills, working with raw animal foods, etc. Wiping cloths were removed from the kitchen and placed in the laundry.

    Giuseppe's Tuscany Grill

    Location: 7072 Big Beaver Boulevard, Homewood

    Inspection Date: 7/23/24

    • 601.11 (A) Equipment, Food Contact Surfaces, Nonfood Contact Surfaces and Utensils
      • Inspector's Comment: Ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have black and tan residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Ice had particle of this same substance inside of it. Ice is to be discarded, machine cleaned and inspected prior to use.
    • 501.111 Controlling Pests
      • Inspector's Comment: Food facility inspection indicates evidence of insects (gnats) activity in kitchen area. The kitchen was closed for nine days and left dishes and pans unwashed in the kitchen with water in them. Facility washed dishes and will contact exterminator for treatment.

    Harmony Ridge Golf Course

    Location: 1280 Breitenstein Road, Harmony Township

    Inspection Date: 7/1/24

    • 601.11 (A) Equipment, Food Contact Surfaces, Nonfood Contact Surfaces and Utensils
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed black residue on internal surfaces of small ice machine. Unit drained, cleaned and sanitized during inspection.

    Marathon

    Location: 2603 Constitution Boulevard, Chippewa Township

    Inspection Date: 7/15/24

    • 501.111 Controlling Pests
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed many mouse droppings on the floor of the rear storage room by the water meter and behind the white chest freezer.

    A follow up inspection was conducted at this Marathon location on July 23. On this visit, the store was marked as in-compliance.

    Ollie's Bargain Outlet

    Location: 760 Beaver Valley Mall, Center Township

    Inspection Date: 6/28/24

    • 103.11 (A-P) Person in Charge, Duties
      • Inspector's Comment: The person in charge failed to notify the Department of a rodent infestation, an imminent health risk.
    • 101.11 Safe, Unadulterated & Honestly Presented
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed a bag of chips with a hole in the bag and a live mouse inside the bag. This bag was discarded during this inspection. Observed visible evidence, such as gnawed packaging, holes in food products, urine and multiple rodent droppings on food containers and food shelves which contaminated prepackaged foods in the sales area.
    • 501.111 Controlling Pests
      • Inspector's Comment: Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodent activity in all areas of the store. The facility has been working with an exterminator in an attempt to control the infestation for a few weeks. Potential rodent harborage areas on the exterior of the building perimeter observed in sides and rear area due to overgrowth, stacks of wood and pallets.

    A follow up inspection was conducted at the Ollie's Bargain Outlet location on July 16. On this visit, the store was marked as in-compliance.

    PDQ Mart

    Location: 1203 Gringo Road, Hopewell Township

    Inspection Date: 7/12/24

    • 103.11 (A-P) Person in Charge, Duties
      • Inspector's Comment: The person in charge failed to notify the department of a mice infestation which is an imminent health risk and to take proper actions to stop the sale of food items as required.
    • 305.11 Food Storage, Preventing Contamination from the Premises
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed evidence of the rook leaking in the dish room with spatter of a black substance on the wall, three bays sink and floor. Numerous ceiling tiles missing in store. Observed shelves that are dirty or have debris on them with food stored on or below them.
    • 501.17 Ready-to-Eat, Time/Temperature Control for Safety Food, Date Marking
      • Inspector's Comment: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat tuna sandwiches, a time/temperature control for safety food, located in the cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Person in charge is unsure how long these sandwiches were in cooler. Sandwiches were discarded for safety.
    • 701.11 Discarding or Reconditioning Unsafe, Adulterated or Contaminated Food
      • Inspector's Comment: Six containers of milk that expired on July 11 were not removed from the cooler and still offered for sale. Milk was removed during this inspection.
    • 501.111 Controlling Pests
      • Inspector's Comment: Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodents activity in the walk in cooler, stock room, three bay sink area, food service counters and cashier areas, but facility does not have a pest control program. Numerous packages of food that have been eaten by rodents located in the cooler. Potential rodent harborage areas inside and outside the food facility observed due to the number of extra items stacked inside and high grass outside.
    • 202.11 Restriction-Presence and Use
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed poisonous and toxic material other than those required for the operation and maintenance of a food facility.

    A follow up inspection was conducted at the PDQ Mart location on July 16. On this visit, the store was marked as in-compliance.

    Penn Beverage

    Location: 2310 8th Avenue, Beaver Falls

    Inspection Date: 7/15/24

    • 501.111 Controlling Pests
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed several mouse droppings in a blue bucket under the hand wash sink and on the floor in the three bowl ware wash room. Cleaned at this inspection. Corrected.

    Roma's Catering

    Location: 2132 Sheffield Road, Aliquippa

    Inspection Date: 7/25/24

    • 302.11 Packaged and Unpackaged Food-Separation, Packaging & Segregation
      • Inspector's Comment: Pasta in the prep area stored uncovered with no covering on the rack by the back door. Pasta covered during this inspection. Raw sausage was stored above ready to eat foods in the reach in cooler. Sausage moved during this inspection. Repeat violation (12/29/22, 07/25/24).
    • 501.17 Ready-to-Eat, Time/Temperature Control for Safety Food, Date Marking
      • Inspector's Comment: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the cooler, is not being date marked.
    • 501.19 Time as a Public Health Control
      • Inspector's Comment: Time in lieu of temperature being used in the food facility to control ready to eat potentially hazardous foods without written procedures or documentation to verify disposition of food. Observed trays of pasta sitting on rack at 76.2 degrees by back door. Pasta moved to cooler during this inspection.
    • 502.13 Single-Service & Single-Use Articles, Use Limitations
      • Inspector's Comment: Food facility is reusing product food containers equipment which is intended to be a single-use article. these items are not designed to be cleaned and sanitized properly nor are durable for multiple uses. Single use aluminum pans being re-used multiple times for food storage and/or preparation.

    Seven Oaks Country Club

    Location: 301 Dano Drive, Beaver

    Inspection Date: 7/16/24

    • 501.111 Controlling Pests
      • Inspector's Comment: Observed approximately 10 mouse droppings behind the water heater in the dry storage area. Droppings cleaned during inspection. Stated that facility is treated regularly by a pest control company, and will notify company of activity.
