Manchester United 'makes Ivan Toney transfer decision' after Rasmus Hojlund injury

Manchester United are reportedly keeping their options open with Brentford's Ivan Toney, despite the recent signing of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna .

The injury to Rasmus Hojlund has left United short on striking options, with Zirkzee yet to prove himself in the Premier League . Hojlund is expected to be sidelined for six weeks due to a hamstring issue picked up during a friendly against Arsenal.

And the hamstring injury means Hojlund will miss key fixtures including the Community Shield against Manchester City at Wembley, United's Premier League opener against Fulham, an away game versus Brighton and the Liverpool clash in September. While Hojlund could return after the September internationals, this leaves Erik ten Hag's squad thin on attacking options.

According to The Telegraph , United may reconsider their stance on Toney, with the Dutch manager keen to bolster his attacking line-up. Despite young talent Chido Obi-Martin agreeing to join United from Arsenal, Toney remains a viable option. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano had previously suggested that Obi-Martin was assured of being third choice for the upcoming season, which influenced his decision to join United.

The 16-year-old was expected to play primarily for the club's academy while also getting first-team opportunities when needed. However, renewed interest in Toney could signal a change in plans for United.

The England international has a year left on his deal with Brentford, who were reportedly open to selling him this summer following the signing of Igor Thiago from Club Brugge. However, Thiago suffered a meniscus injury last month, and will be out for the majority of 2024 - potentially halting Toney's exit.

It had been reportedly previously Brentford were looking for a whopping $126.7m (£100m/€118m) at one point, but that figure is likely to have dropped significantly now given Toney has one year left on his deal. It will now be up to Brentford whether they want to cash in on the talisman, or risk losing him for free next year.

Goal scorers do not grow on trees, and in Toney, Brentford have a proven Premier League striker who can be the difference between staying up comfortably, or being relegated. While his form last term dipped following his eight-month betting suspension, with Toney scoring just four goals in 17, a season prior he found the back of the net 20 times in 33 Premier League appearances.
