New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo and edge rusher Matthew Judon were seen having a heated discussion at practice earlier this week, leading to Judon exiting the field.

While Judon has been present at training camp, he hasn’t actually been practicing as he seeks a new contract.

The good news is that Mayo and Judon seem to have smoothed things over.

“Look, we had a conversation,” Mayo said, via Eric Edholm of NFL.com . “I have a great relationship with Matthew, I have a great relationship with the players. But we’re moving forward and we’re trying to work it out.”

Judon, who has one year left on his contract, returned to the field on Thursday, and this time, he was participating in drills.

“I remember as a player it’s always a difficult time when you go through contract negotiations and things like that,” Mayo said. “And in saying that for the rest of the team, we’re pushing forward. Fully expect Matthew to be out here today and participate in practice.”

The Patriots may end up trading Matthew Judon

This has been discussed ad nauseam, but it absolutely makes sense for the Patriots to trade Judon.

Judon turns 32 years old this month. Considering that New England is clearly a rebuilding franchise, the star pass rusher no longer fits the team’s timeline.

Judon is entering his fourth season with the Patriots after signing with the club in 2021.

He played in just four games in 2023 before going down with a torn bicep, but when he was on the field, he was productive, logging 13 tackles and four sacks.

Judon was dominant in his first couple of years in Foxborough, racking up 12.5 and 15.5 sacks, respectively.

The Grand Valley State product spent the first five years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, but never logged double-digit sacks until he got to the Patriots.

Judon made four straight trips to the Pro Bowl between 2019 and 2022.

The Patriots could certainly get some value in a trade for Judon, which would make a lot more sense than playing out the 2024 campaign with him and losing him for nothing next offseason.

Of course, New England could also deal the veteran at the trade deadline, but that’s a rather risky proposition with the deadline not coming around until November.

We’ll see what becomes of Matthew Judon in the coming weeks.
