Why Elton John Thought a Beatles Reunion Would Never Happen

Even before the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison, a Beatles reunion seemed unlikely. The Fab Four didn’t end on the best of terms. Given that, you would have been hard pressed to get them back in the same room in the mid-’70s. Elton John was asked about the potential for a Beatles reunion in 1976. He didn’t feel that it was in the cards. Find out why, below.

Why Elton John Thought a Beatles Reunion Would Never Happen

The Beatles called it quits in 1970. Though their stint was relatively brief, it was legendary. Naturally, fans of the band held on to the sliver of hope that they might get back together one day. Speaking to Playboy, John dashed that hope.

“The only thing good about getting The Beatles back together would be to watch how Lennon and McCartney write songs and how the four would get on,” John once said. “It’s an absolutely impossible situation; there’s no way they will.”

He did venture to say that, if they did somehow end up getting back together, that it could be great. He recognized how timeless they were as artists, calling their music “Standards.”

“If somehow it did happen, it could be a disaster, or it could be great,” John continued. “I don’t think anyone has come along since The Beatles to match their popularity, or their achievement when you think of the songs that they wrote in that space of time that have become more or less standards.”

As we all know, fans have only been gifted psuedo Beatles reunions over the years. Though it might be enough to hold us over, it will never match the excitement of the band’s heyday. Revisit their greatest hits, below.
