There were a number of celebrities who passed away within the past week, including two notable actresses: Shelley Duvall and Shannen Doherty. Shelley Duvall passed away on Thursday July 11th at her home in Blanco, Texas. The cause of death was complications from diabetes and news of her death was confirmed by her partner Dan Gilroy.

Former Girls singer/guitarist Christopher Owens is back with his first new music in seven years. Set against a shimmering mix of acoustic and electric guitars, “I Think About Heaven” is sunny and optimistic, with Owens singing “I think about heaven and I smile / Things don’t seem so bad.” He was born and raised into a devout Christian family and that has colored his songwriting from the beginning but is front and center here. It’s a very immediately likable song, all six minutes of it, and you can listen below.

Actress Maggie Grace appears in the sci-fi fantasy dramedy The Secret Art of Human Flight, which will be available on demand beginning August 23. The independent film, directed by H.P. Mendoza (Fruit Fly, I Am a Ghost) and written by Jesse Orenshein (American Ninja Warrior), premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Festival. In 2024, distribution rights were acquired by Level 33 Entertainment, and the film was released in theaters in July.

Just days after performing in Central Park for Good Morning America, Green Day began their ‘Saviors’ stadium tour at DC’s Nationals Park last night (7/29). They opened with “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” the first song on their new album Saviors, and then, as promised, they went on to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot. They began by ripping through Dookie in full, from its fiery opening track “Burnout” to its hidden track “All My Myself,” and they followed the album with a few more Saviors songs (“Look Ma, No Brains!,” “One Eyed Bastard,” “Dilemma”) and a few others from throughout their career (“Know Your Enemy,” “Minority,” “Brain Stew”).

After kicking off on Friday, the 2024 edition of Newport Folk Festival continued on Saturday (7/27) at Fort Adams State Park. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings closed out the night, and it was another guest appearance-filled day: Orville Peck brought out Nathaniel Rateliff for their duet “Conquer the Heart” (he also told the crowd the three rules of his shows were to sing along, dance, and cry if you felt the need to). The War on Drugs had The Hold Steady‘s Craig Finn join them for a rendition of John Hiatt’s “Walk On” (which they previously covered together in Philadelphia in 2022). Rhiannon Giddens was joined by Taj Mahal and Joan Baez (Joan also discussed her poetry book, When You See My Mother, Ask Her to Dance, with Carmel Holt for the “SHEROES” podcast earlier in the day, and read a few poems ahead of Welch and Rawlings’ set, introducing them).

Charli XCX has been teasing another new remix from the album, one of our favorites of 2024 so far, and now a new version of “Guess,” featuring Billie Eilish, has arrived. “Guess” isn’t actually on BRAT — it’s one of the bonus tracks from Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not — and Charli co-wrote it with Dylan Brady of 100 gecs and The Dare. Canadian group Nap Eyes have announced The Neon Gate, their first album in three years, which will be out October 18 via Paradise of Bachelors. There is a lot going on thematically on this record, including musical adaptations of poems by W.B. Yeats (“I See Phantoms of Hatred and of the Heart’s Fullness and of the Coming Emptiness”) and Alexander Pushkin (“Demons”), while other songs were inspired by an online Dungeons & Dragons campaign and Nintendo video game Wave Race 64.

A dangerous drug that is being mixed into fentanyl is causing those who inject it to develop a rash of sores that resembles a case of flesh-eating bacteria. People experiencing homelessness around Denver can sometimes be seen with these bloody, weeping wounds. Mirror Starts Moving Without Me, the follow-up to 2021’s Death of a Cheerleader, is due out on October 25 via City Slang. “I took a lot of inspiration from my younger self on this album,” vocalist and guitarist Mia Berrin says. “I wanted to get back in touch with my creative roots. After hitting a particularly rough bout of writer’s block, I challenged myself to make a playlist of my all-time favorite songs from childhood to adulthood. It was healing in a way I didn’t expect! Before we went into the studio I made my bandmates and Cody [Fitzgerald] do the same, then we all listened to each other’s and had a long conversation about them.
