None of the headlines involving the Dallas Cowboys are about their performance on the field. Instead, the focus has been on off-the-field topics, mainly the contract extensions of several key players.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is in camp and participating but is entering the final year of his contract. Given how much money some of his peers received this offseason, it would be safe to assume that Prescott’s next deal will easily clear $50 million annually.

Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is also looking for an extension and has not reported to training camp. He is reportedly seeking a deal similar to what Justin Jefferson agreed to with the Minnesota Vikings.

Jefferson was made the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Not only is Lamb seeking that title, but edge rusher Micah Parsons has that in his sights for next offseason when he becomes extension-eligible.

Things are going to be very expensive for the Dallas Cowboys if they want to retain three of their key players. To make that feasible, other moves will have to be made to accommodate their contracts.

One avenue could be trading away some of their established talent. One player who could be on the chopping block, in the opinion of Anthony DiBona of Pro Football Network , is edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence.

DiBona has named Lawrence as one player the Dallas Cowboys could look to trade during the 2024 season. Still a Pro Bowl-caliber player, he could fetch the team some long-term assets while clearing salary.

“While Micah Parsons is clearly a foundational piece on the edge for the Dallas Cowboys, DeMarcus Lawrence isn’t getting any younger and is heading into the final year of his three-year contract with the team.

Dallas could actually save $10 million by trading Lawrence, which would free up more snaps for the Cowboys’ young pass rushers. Dallas selected Marshawn Kneeland in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, potentially signaling the end of Lawrence’s tenure,” DiBona wrote .

It is hard to imagine that the Dallas Cowboys are going to be able to afford an extension for Lawrence. It would be shocking if they paid him before someone such as Parsons.

That makes him a prime trade candidate. The team would prefer getting something for him now, even if it weakens their defensive unit a little bit, instead of watching him depart in free agency for nothing.
