Dame was ordered to pay $800K back in 2022 after losing a defamation and copyright infringement case against filmmaker Josh Webber. Webber claimed that after they stopped working together, Dame attempted to pass off the 2019 film Dear Frank as his own.
At the time, a judge awarded Webber and Muddy Water Pictures $805,000 collectively. Muddy Water Pictures was awarded $30,000 for copyright infringement and $125,000 in punitive damages, as Webber won $400,000 in compensatory damages for defamation and $250,000 in punitive damages.
According to the suit, Dame was hired to help co-direct the film, but was fired two years later for allegedly being inebriated on set. After his firing, Dash claimed that he still had stake in the film as Webber claimed the mogul pitched Dear Frank to networks including BET — but under a different title, The List .
Following the verdict, Dame took to Instagram, saying, “You have to lose some battles to win a war… stay tuned #fatliars #youllneverbeme. Don’t ever say you Directed MY movie.”
In response, Webber simply wrote on Instagram, “Case closed” while tagging Dash’s Instagram account, with the hashtag #dearfrankmovie.”
Dear Frank starred Brian White, Claudia Jordan, Columbus Short, Nicholas Turturro, Torrei Hart, and Kearia Schroeder, with a cameo from Lil Durk.
