Katie Couric warned Democrats that they have “kind of lost” working class voters and they need to “do better” to win them back before November.

Couric, a longtime journalist who worked for outlets such as NBC and CBS, joined Alyssa Mastromonaco on the Hysteria podcast to discuss the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris , the presumptive Democratic Party nominee, and Republicans Donald Trump and running partner JD Vance .

While discussing numerous Democrats using the line “weird” to as an insult for Trump and Vance, Couric argued Democrats need to do more than just target Republicans.

“Two things can be true, right? You can think that their behavior and their rhetoric is weird, but you can also do a better job of reaching out to disaffected voters,” Couric said.

The reporter said for the first time in her life she sees the Republican Party winning over more “working class” voters.

“I think that there needs to be a greater connection between the working class and the Democratic Party because, let’s face it, Alyssa, the Democrats have kind of lost the working class. And it was never that way during all my years of covering politics,” she said. “You had the head of the Teamsters at the RNC, you have people buying into this notion that Republicans care about dinner table issues much more than Democrats. And these narratives, I think, have become too deeply entrenched about liberal college-educated elites who are condescending.”

Couric added she began to see the trend after Hillary Clinton infamously used the phrase “basket of deplorables” when railing against Trump and his supporters.

Democrats need to make a “much stronger connection” to this voting bloc, Couric argued. She also recommended Harris do some work next to some “regular Joes.”

“I just want to see her with a welding hat on, working with regular Joes,” she said.
