A top WWE executive was asked this week about a potential working relationship with AEW. And his response gave no reason for wrestling fans to expect a partnership any time soon.

These are interesting days in the professional wrestling industry. After a couple of decades of WWE lording over the business, AEW has carved out a solid niche and is the legitimate No. 2 company in the world. A key part of their success has been their willingness to work with other organizations.

In its short time in existence, the company has worked extensively with NJPW, TNA , CMLL, and AAA. Their Forbidden Door event, where they have cross-promotional matches, has become a staple of their yearly calendar. It is a strategy WWE has rarely used, but that has changed recently.

With founder Vince McMahon out of the picture, the current WWE regime has been willing to let their talent dip their toes in other waters and they recently formed a working relationship with TNA Wrestling. Recently, AEW boss Tony Khan was asked about working with WWE in the future and he wasn’t against the idea.

However, on Wednesday, WWE executive vice president of talent relations & head of communications Chris Legentil completely shut down the notion of a WWE-AEW relationship.

“No interest. I just want to make it clear,” he said on the “ Sports Media with Richard Deitsch .” “There is definitely a variety of excellent talent that don’t currently reside in WWE. There is no shot there that is being fired. It’s just to say, the answer to your question is no conversation has been had in relation to that.”

The two companies having a partnership always seemed unlikely, but a key WWE official making a public statement about it should now put that wrestling fantasy to bed.
