Big Anatolian Shepherd 'Submits' to Border Collie Pup Like the Best Uncle Ever

When you're an uncle, you'll find that you'd do anything for your nieces or nephews, even if it's a little embarrassing. Did you even really live if your 6 foot uncle didn't put on a tiara and attend at least one tea party? I sure didn't.

The same goes for dogs, apparently. On Monday, July 29th, one Anatolian Shepherd tried his best not to give into a Border Collie puppy’s antics, to no avail. She’s so charismatic that he ends up giving in:

There is genuinely never a dull day on Raventree Ranch, it’s just not possible. When you’ve got as much cuteness going on as they do, you just kind of have to give up.

The big guy in this video is Judge, one of their three Anatolian Shepherds. If you ask Raventree’s followers who the best one is, they would probably say Judge, but the ranch can’t play favorites! The Border Collie pup’s name is Ru, and ever since coming home, she’s been totally smitten with Judge. She’s also been pushing all of his buttons, but he’s too sweet to say anything!

Judge knows to be gentle with Ru like he knows to be gentle with the baby goats. While he may look grumpy on the outside, he secretly loves playing with everyone on the ranch, and more than that, he loves to protect them. Even if that means giving in and letting the little one boop his nose!

Livestock Guardians and Herders Have Boundaries

It may look like Ru is pushing her luck here, but this is the relationship the herders and the LGDs have on this ranch. It’s daylight, so the guardians are a little more “relaxed,” since most of their guardian work gets done at night. So, there’s a little more room for play.

Even the friendliest of livestock guardians have boundaries, though. For example, had Ru wanted to play at night, Judge would not have been as receptive, just like how some of Ru’s older siblings should never be interrupted when they’re herding.

To prevent fights and keep their relationships good, most farmers will keep their herders and their guardians completely separated, locking one up while the other works. Otherwise, one dog could confuse the other, weakening their defenses. That’s when lives are lost.

Some farmers keep their herding dogs and their livestock guardians separated at all times out of an abundance of caution. Livestock guardians are territorial and herders are overbearing, so it keeps everyone happy—but it’s not a requirement. If done right, your working dogs can get along just as well as Ru and grumpy uncle Judge!
