Yogi Babu, known for his comedic and dramatic roles in South Indian cinema, is set to showcase his versatility in the upcoming Tamil survival thriller, Boat. Following his recent appearance in Aranmanai 4, the actor has taken on a lead role that promises to reveal a more serious side of his acting prowess. With the film’s release imminent, anticipation is building among fans eager to see this new side of Yogi’s talent. Ahead of Boat’s theatrical release, this article highlights the film’s release date, cast, plot, and much more.

What is the release date of Yogi Babu’s Boat movie?

Written and directed by Chimbudevan, the movie Boat is set to premiere in theaters tomorrow, August 2, 2024. Interestingly, the film will be clashing with Vijay Antony’s Mazhai Pidikkatha Manithan and Nakkhul’s Vasco Da Gama, adding to the anticipation surrounding its box office performance.

Alongside Yogi Babu, Boat features an ensemble cast including Chinni Jayanth, M. S. Bhaskar, Madhumitha, Gouri G. Kishan, Jesse Fox-Allen, and others. It has been produced under the joint banners of Maali and Maanvi Movie Makers and Chimbudevan Entertainment. On the technical front, Ghibran composed the music, Madhesh Manickam handled the cinematography, and Dinesh Ponraj took charge of editing.

As a survival thriller, Boat has piqued the interest of fans, especially regarding its age rating and suitability for children. The filmmakers recently announced that the film has completed its censorship formalities, receiving a U certificate with 2 hours and 5 minutes of runtime. This means that the movie is fit for unrestricted public exhibition and is family-friendly.

Moreover, the makers recently organized an early screening of the film, which received mostly positive reviews. One early viewer shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), praising the thriller as a unique effort. He wrote, “#BOAT – Director @chimbu_deven returns with a socio-political satire set entirely at sea. Featuring multiple characters on a single boat. It slows down a bit in the middle, but the film offers striking political dialogues, interesting situations, and a compelling climax. A different attempt.”

Additionally, makers have recently dropped two videos, titled Boat – Sneak Peak 01 & 02. This video features behind-the-scenes filming of Boat, showcasing cast and crew efforts in making the movie. Considering early reviews, it is expected to mint significant numbers at the box office on the opening day.

Tamil movie Boat plot, true story & more

According to the trailer for Boat, the film is based on a true story. Set during the Japanese bombardment, the plot centers around ten individuals attempting to escape by sea in a small boat. Among them are a pregnant mother and her son, a father and daughter, and a mysterious individual labeled a terrorist by the British. As their journey unfolds, they encounter numerous life-threatening challenges. In a dramatic twist, the boat begins to sink, forcing three people to jump overboard. This leads to intense conflicts among the passengers as they fight for survival. This struggle for survival truly defines the film’s genre.

In a recent interview, director Chimbudevan shared the inspirations behind Boat. He said, “Reading Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea during my school days planted the seed for this film. Over the years, novels like Sandilyan’s Kadal Pura and Thanneer Desam. Along with several sea-themed movies, have deepened my fascination with maritime stories. The sea, with its ever-changing nature, clouds, sky, wind, and weather, feels alive. Coupling this dynamic setting with the political turmoil of 1943, the resilience of humanity is what Boat is all about.”

Furthermore, he explained, “A friend’s great-grandfather was among the approximately 500,000 people who evacuated Madras when it was bombed by the Japanese. He recounted how some people fled by sea, taking to boats to escape the chaos.”

With early screenings garnering positive reviews, it will be interesting to see how audiences react to Boat after its theatrical release. Stay tuned for updates on its box office performance.
