It's always interesting to see what happens when we have the chance to introduce our dogs to another species of animal. Of course, many dogs will get the opportunity to meet cats, squirrels, birds, and similar animals who might end up in your backyard (or even inside your house as pets). But unless your pup is a service dog, it might end there without a little bit of luck while taking a walk or a hike together.

Fortunately, luck was definitely on this dog's side the day this TikTok video was taken. After dreaming of meeting a deer he could only watch from afar, they finally came face to face.

According to the human ( @gilliancris ) who belongs to the gorgeous Goldendoodle pup in this TikTok video that was shared on Thursday, July 31, Cash had been watching deer from his porch, and this day, he got to meet one.

Though Cash absolutely lost his mind when he first saw the deer step out into the road (can't blame him there, this is a big moment), his dad helped him get it together and stay cool and collected as they approached the deer — who, by the way, must be very brave to allow a dog to get this close!

Once he was able to maintain his calm, Cash got right up close to the deer (with his dad holding the leash the whole time, of course).

Unfortunately, Cash's enthusiasm was a little much for the poor deer, who quickly darted back into the woods... but maybe now that they've gotten this close once, it will happen again. Next time, Cash will definitely be more prepared for it!

Until then, he can still watch from the porch...

Do Dogs and Deer Get Along?

Unfortunately, it sounds like a lifelong friendship with deer may not be in the cards for Cash, short of some extraordinary circumstances taking place.

Obviously, deer are a bit skittish in the first place, so seeing an unfamiliar animal is enough to stress them out a bit. The worry that your dog might do something to hurt a deer is a very real one, too — no matter how well you know your dog, it can be really hard to predict their behavior in a situation like that before they're ever in it.

However, deer are also known to attack dogs when they feel threatened, especially during mating season, so that's another potential risk.

If you're going out for a walk where you suspect deer will be present, it's even more important to keep your dog on the lead, just like Cash's dad did... and certainly be very cautious. I don't want anyone to get hurt!
